Visiting Hyeonchungsa and Independence Hall
On May 25th, me and other 18th wavers took a bus heading to Hyeonchungsa, located in Asan, Choongchung province. After having short meditation in the morning, we moved to the Independence Hall. Hyeonchungsa is a temple built after general Soon Sin Lee, and the name 'Hyeonchungsa' was given by king 숙종 after general Lee died in battle. Having meditation toward the portrait of general Lee in Hyeonchungsa became a opportunity to think again about the great achievement general accomplished with his patriotism, and our country's painful history. I've heard that there is also a memorial hall with the model of the 'Turtle boat'(an ironclad warship shaped like a tortoise), but we couldn't actually visit the memorial hall. Next time when I visit Hyeonchungsa, I definitely will visit the memorial hall too.
After finishing our schedule in Hyeonchungsa, we had lunch and moved to the Independence Hall. Right after we arrived, we had a meditation again in the commemorating place, thinking of our ancestor's sacrifice done for our independence. Unlike Hyeonchungsa, we had more schedules in the Independence Hall than only having meditation; we listened to the guide's introduction of our history, walking around in two memorial halls. The first hall's theme was the process of regaining our country from Japan, and the second hall's theme was the ordeal which our ancestors had. Both halls depicted our sad history very well with delicate models of an army for national independence and an army raised in the cause of justice.
Wearing thick formal Hanbok and walking all day was pretty exhausting but it surely was a meaningful experience for me, and became a good chance to think about our country's history and the effort of our ancestors who endeavored for nowaday's Korea. I thank for countless people's sacrifice that I had lived a life of abundance, lacking practically nothing.
2013 Vision Trip - England
Right after midterm, and before the report card was sent home, about half of the 18th wavers went to the USA and the other half took a plane to Europe. I took a plane to England on May 8th, looking forward to 10 wonderful days I will spend in England, France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy.First day, we arrived late at night so didn't have any special 'tour' in England, but almost didn't slept..
ㄴthis didn't let us get back to bed!
We stayed for about two days in England. I personally was a little bit disappointed about the touring course... Visiting Oxford and UCL was a good experience and did made me think again about my future, but it did took too long time.. I was full of excitement when I heard that we were going to visit the 'Big Ben' and 'Trafalgar square' but was quite shocked when I found out that we are only going to see them INSIDE THE BUS for less than 30 seconds..!!!!!
But I enjoyed all the other schedules in UK. The weather was okay(unlike what I heard about England's weather..) but something sad did happened XD
In Wellington, my friend broke my camera. On the first day of vision trip!!!!!!!!!!!(actually second day if we count the day which we only played card games) She promised me to take many pictures for me with her camera for left 9 days but she left her own camera in KIST lab located in Germany on the 6th day. So most of my pictures'(taken after England) quality is very low cuz they are taken with my phone which literally sucks.
ㄴIts me in Oxford! The most impressive thing in Oxford was that every students must take a tutoring class with professors. One to three students are allocated to one professor, and this sometimes be a heavy burden for students because they should prepare a lot to successfully finish the class. Oh! I also visited a campus in Oxford which appeared in movie 'Harry Potter'

ㄴThe symbol of London Tower Bridge across the Thames River! I've heard that night view of the Tower Bridge is more magnificent but I couldn't see it... It surely was beautiful in daytime too, but next time I will
surely come at night.
- I'm standing on the border line of time! Greenwich observatory with my friend who broke my camera :-). The weather was just so wonderful when we were playing there and I loved the ice cream there!

There were few more places I visited in England but these were sites where I remember the best. I also loved the musical 'Billy Eliot' too but I couldn't take any pictures there because my phone was out of battery :-(

Don't think you're alone
This is the OST of Korea's teen drama, 'School 2013' sung by Bo-Kyung Kim.It's title is Don’t Think You’re Alone (혼자라고 생각말기) and the lyrics are so rosy and wishful, and it cheers me up a lot when I feel down.
I'm just so addicted to this song and just wanted to introduce you XD

reflection on Nacirema
"Body Ritual Among the Nacirema", written by an anthropologist named Horace Miner in 1956, seems to be about a distinct tribe called Nacirema which have somewhat unique and awkward culture and rituals. Nacirema is full of unfamiliar traditions and jobs like 'medicine-man', 'holy mouth man' and so on and this made the Nacirema's culture seem more mysterious to me. However, the story of Nacirema wasn't everything in "Body Ritual Among the Nacirema".
At the first glance, I didn't realize the writer's hidden intention, and even wrote a long reflection about Nacirema's culture insisting that people should try to understand the diversity of culture, and try not to judge it with their own perspective saying that other's culture is more inferior than theirs. I believed without any doubt that the essay was nothing more about but a real existing tribe called "Nacirema" and was shocked about their exotic culture. Then I thought that it is just a small difference coming from the different way of life. Without noticing the fact that 'Nacirema' was spelled backword 'American', my reflection was totally far from what the writer first wanted the reader to see from his essay and even seemed rather stupid and embarrassing.
The fact that Nacirema really meant American came as a big shock to me. All the traditions and mysterious words were pointing real existing cultures in America, for instance having one bathroom in their house (described as shrine), and dentists stuffing medicine into rotten teeth (described as holy-mouth man stuffing magical ingredients in every holes in teeth).
I believe that the period "Body Ritual Among the Nacirema" was written must have something to do with the writter's intend. This essay was written in 1956, when America was having a cold war with Russia, then called the Soviet Union. During the cold war, many American's had a misconception that their culture is the best and should be the status amongst every other cultures, just like the sinocentrism which ancient Chinese had. By depicting America's culture as exotic and abnormal culture of Nacirema by only using different expression, the writer must have tried to awaken the Americans with delusion that other cultures have poorer quality then them.
After thinking of the writer's reason why he wrote about Nacirema, I had my own chance to look back my behavior. Haven't I neglected other country's culture only because they seem more uncivilized or different from my one? Haven't you made any mistake to other people because of your strong belief toward your 'superior' culture?
