My second album art
This is the result of my second album art making. It is actually very fun job and I definitely will try the third one if I have some time.
If you read my previous posting about my art class's final project (creating my own album art), you will know that I've already finished my work. However for some reason, I decided to make another album art, not to hand in to teacher, but only for fun. This time I made a cover art of 'Loneliness amplification device(외로움 증폭장치)' by Busker Busker with my friend Seung Hye Kim.
In the lyrics of the song keywords like 'saw-toothed wheel', 'hands of a clock', 'second-hand' and 'clockwork' appears a lot repeatedly, so the main element of the picture became a clock.
First thing I did was taking a picture of Seung Hye's antic looking clock and open it with Adobe Photoshop CS5. Then I erased the number signs of the clock and left only the hands of the clock.
One of the biggest keywords in the song was 'saw-toothed wheels' and I wanted to express it in the picture but didn't know how to. So I first drew it on a spare paper like the picture attached on left. I changed is as a form a brush and stamped it on the empty center part of the clock, and moderated the transparency of my drawing.
Unlike last time, I wanted to show the title of the song bigger than the artist's name, so wrote '외로움 증폭장치' in Korean, again on a spare paper like this
I changed it as a brush too, and stamped it down the clock.
Only thing left was to decorate the picture more, so I just added random colors down the edges, and mixed a bit of red in the picture of the saw tooth wheels.

How many 'CREATURES' in room 805??
Unlike other rooms, more than 6 alive creatures(usually human) are living in 805, my room.
Even when we count out the 6-legged animals(horrible insects), there are more than 20 living things, when actually 6 human beings are allowed in one room.
How? Don't be surprised..
Six humans, one snail and 17 tadpoles are living altogether in our room since June 16th, 2013.
About two weeks ago, me and my roommates decided to take a walk around our dormitory and found an enormous puddle behind the Futsal field. The puddle seemed to be very dirty but when we looked in closer, we found out that the water was actually very clean but seemed to be dirty because of the countless tadpoles and other organisms. We brought 17 of them to our room and decided to raise them.
Two days before we caught the tadpoles, I was strolling in my school's vegetable garden and found a baby snail moving slowly on the smallest potato I've ever seen. I decided to raise it with all my roommates in 805, and named it 'Sieun Lee' because I found it. XD
It sometimes feel weird when I hear my roommates saying 'Hey, Sieun is pooping!'...

Few days ago, my roommates and I decided to send 14 of the tadpoles back to the nature because they seemed to get too much stress in a small bowl. Three tadpoles are still living in our room and they all have four legs now. I didn't took a picture of them having four legs but this is the picture of the tadpole when it started to grow its back leg.

My work of 'Op Art'
What do you feel from this picture?
This abstract piece of art is only consisted of straight lines, black and white color but it seems to be three-dimensional; the center of the picture seems to be located farther from the viewer
The genre of this picture is called the 'Op art', which is also known as '
Optical art'.
Op art gives visual illusion to the viewers like movement, finding hidden image, flashing and vibration, patterns or swelling or warping.
Not all pieces of op art is consisted of two colors(black and white). Colors of the painting may differ, and those colors can give bigger illusion to the viewer with the saturation and brightness of the color, like the picture attached here.
Creating an op art with two color is not difficult; you should only draw the lines as you want, and fill out the spaces with black to show the illusion you intended. As I was spending time surfing the Internet, I found this interesting genre of art, and thought that I would love to try one too.
This is what I drew in my sketchbook only with black marker
I named this picture 'Time'. On the upper left side of the picture, there is a face of a child, and as the picture get focused to the black hole on the right side, faces of people getting older is attached. I wanted to express the child getting older as time flows by, so I inserted other pictures from the magazine like calender and different kinds of clock.

U.K. and other Europe countries' education
2. Why I chose this topic
From may 8th to 18th, our school's frosh went on a Vision Trip to the U.S. or Europe as their own choice. Since I have an experience traveling the U.S, I chose Europe and had an opportunity to visit five countries, the U.K, France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. I first thought that those five countries will have similar culture only because they are located in Europe, but found out that I was completely wrong when I visited them; they all had very distinct cultures and attraction. There were so many different cultural elements for instance European's life style, architecture, food culture, but the thing that interested me the most was their educating system, especially the U.K's. In the U.K, we visited Wellington school, Oxford and UCL, listened to the info-session and had a school tour. Their school system was very unique and I became very curious about other countries' school too but we visited schools in only England so I decided to write mainly about the U.K's Education.
3. Information about the U.K's education
1) the U.K's school system
Before I mention the details of England's education, I would like to introduce their school system first. England is using 6-5-2-3 system. This means that students in England get education from the primary school for 6 years, 5 years from secondary school(which is not divided to middle or high school), take a Sixth form or further education for two years, and study in college for three years, if they do not major in architect, medical science or dentistry. Kindergartens aren't compulsory, and the compulsory part of the whole education is only primary school and secondary school which is 11 years in total.
In my country Korea, we usually send children to kindergarten when they are 5~7 years old, and they enter elementary school in 8, but the U.K's students enter the school in different age.

The upper table shows the grade in Korea, the U.K, and the U.S.A, differing by the students' age. You will be able to find something unfamiliar in the U.K's grade, Sixth form, which is 2 years of preparation for college. During the sixth form, students study for AS/A-level which is a test needed for university application. On the first year of sixth form, students listen to 4 subjects of AS level, and on the second year they listen to selected three subjects from the first year and have a in-depth study. The A-level score is admitted only when a student complete both AS and A2 in same subject.
2) The school I visited: Wellington school ⓵
In the second day we arrived in London, we visited and had a tour in Wellington school which is one of the most famous schools in the U.K. Wellington school, established in 1859, have a very developed faculties, and is build on a very wide land(12ha). 11th graders and sixth form's 12th graders introduced their school to our school's students and the student who was assigned to my group was Korean 12th grader. Before we begin the tour, I noticed something weird from studen't school uniform.
(1) Two students in the picture are both Wellington's students, but their uniform seemed different, and boys' uniform was also different. There were two groups of the students, one wearing a formal school uniform with blue skirts/pants and the other wearing free but formal dress. I asked the reason to our group's guide and she told me that in England, they usually alleviate the rules about the uniform to sixth form students. The girl in the left picture's age is same with me(15) and she is in secondary school so she is supposed to wear the right uniform of her school, and the girl in the right picture is wearing her own formal dress because she is a sixth form student. For sixth form students, many other rules are loosen than before and the reason for it is because the school wants to treat them as almost adult, close to graduation. The U.K's school uniformed showed difference from Korea's uniform in this way.
(2) Since the Wellington school is consisted of very outstanding students, it is quite difficult to compare it with Korea's normal high schools. It rather had many similar points with my school, KMLA like having expensive school fee. Wellington also put big emphasis on P.E class, just like our school. They had enormous school yard, gym, rock climbing equipment and many other faculties to develop students' physical ability. Wellington's students also lived in dormitory like us in KMLA, but unlike us living in one big apartment, they had different houses in dormitory like the movie Harry Potter. Our school guide told us that they have many events which house members work and unite together. ⇒This is the picture of Wellington's main building
3) The school I visited: Oxford (⓶)
In Oxford, we had a campus tour with KMLA's graduate student, and had an info-session from saint anne college's college president and other professors. The U.K's university's course of Bachelor is 3 years, unlike Korea which is 4 years. After the Bachelor, they have one year of Master degree and three years of Master's degree. The two most different points in Oxford are as follows.

(1) tutoring system
The most attractive and different program practiced in Oxford was the tutoring system. In Oxford, every students must listen to tutoring class with the professors in ratio of 1~3:1. Our school's graduate who is now Oxford's student told us that in his case, he meets his tutoring professor twice a week alone. He said that since he have to talk a lot with the professor with long time, he have to prepare a lot for the tutoring class and sometimes the class is really hash and the homework is a big burden for him. However he also said that it does give him big sense of accomplishment and lots of new knowledge. Usually when we talk about Korea or America's university lecture, we imagine a big hall full of students and one professor giving a lecture in front of them, like the picture upward, but this kind of tutoring class can give big influence to students individual's development in many ways.
(2) Concentrating on major subject
In Korea or the U.S, university students must take subjects for general education, regardless of students' major. For example, even when the student choose to have major in Biology, he must listen to courses like History as prerequisite. However the U.K's universities were different. This is appliable in not only Oxford but many other british universities. The U.K's universities makes students take the Bachelor for 3 years without general subjects, and only major subject. This is how the british students are able to concentrate in one subject for three years and in the same time, gain sufficient knowledge about their major.
4) The school I visited: UCL ⓷
We listened to school's introduction in the UCL too, and took a look of UCL's campus scattered in London. UCL stands for University College London, and have a merit that students can go to school very easily by public transportation because it is located in overall London. UCL is famous with having 21 Nobel prize winners but do not have any striking points than the Oxford's points so I will only briefly introduce the school. UCL is consisted of 31 colleges, 19 independent institutes and 12 laboratories, and is the oldest and biggest amongst all Constituent college. Fine Art and Architecture is the most famous course of UCL's Bachelor's degree.
5. Afternote
10 days of touring in Europe gave me unforgettable memories with my friends, helped me learn and feel new things and spend happy days. Visiting places with totally different atmosphere and looking how people are living overseas was very valuable experience, and at the same time became a great chance for me to be more closer to other students. Because I had a report to write, I had to look much more closely to Europe's culture while traveling and I think that this helped me spend more profitable time than other students. Even if I only wrote about education in this report, looking for different cultural elements of Europe was very exciting and I thought that we should try to learn and accept some part of their cultures which is better than ours and try to develop our own culture more.
Its secret! 'Manito'
In KMLA, every students have their own secret helpers called 'Manito'. Manito is
an Italian word meaning 'secret friend', and each students have two manitos in a
semester; one who helps till midterm, and another who helps after midterm till
final exam. Every one of us automatically have a friend assigned randomly, and
we should be a secret helper of him or her. Girls are assigned to boys, and boys
are assigned to girls. We usually call our target of helping 'Manitee' (which is
not a real word), and try to cheer our manitee up when he/she seems to be down.
Sometimes we give surprise present and letters, just to make our manitee happy.
The most important thing of every process is to keep our name SECRET to our
manitee till the manito period ends.
Some students however do not take
care of their manitee because they feel that this 'manito-manitee' thing is so
tiresome, or because they do not really like the target whom they are randomly
assigned of. Fortunately my manitos till now (two of them because I was in this
school for only one semester) both didn't abandoned me and gave me lots of
surprise presents.
My first manito moved me a lot with his sincere
letters and delicious snacks, and lots of my friends envied me a lot thanks
to him. He was so romantic that he sent me heart-fluttering songs by facebook,
and links of youtube at night
like these
pictures.
He also gave me
different kinds of snacks through my friends who were supposed not to tell his
name to me. And these 4 pictures near this paragraph are presents and letters my
first manito gave. After the midterm, when my first manito's period was over, he
told me who he was and he was Kun-ho Park in class 5. I'm sure that we got much
more friendlier after this process of 'secret helper'
My second manito is now
giving secret presents to me since the midterm. His first present was a mirror
from the Eiffel tower which he bought during the Vision Trip, and since that, he
gave me many treats twice till now. On 7/4, when our final exam begin, his work
will also be over and I will be able to know who he is. Guessing my manito is
really fun since many other people knows who he is, but only keeps on giving
small hints of him.
My manitos always
cheer me up a lot, and become a source of pride for me.

Art class final project! ; Album art
Art is one of my most favorite subject and in KMLA, we learn how to use photoshop in Art class. For a semester we learned many different skills to decorate and change the original image we have, and the final project given to us was to make a album cover of our own favorite song. The song I chose was 'Don't hate me' by Epic High and I decided to use a picture of my own two hands, painted white and bluish black.
I painted them with white water-color paint, and nails with red paint. Then I gave light and shade after the lines on my palm with blue and black pastel, and drew the face of Joker on my palm. I also gave a shade on my nails with black pastel.
After the painting was done, I took a picture of my hand(which is the one you are seeing upward), and used Adobe Photoshop CS5 to erase the background and fill it with red, and black color. Since the song's overall atmosphere is very exciting, I wanted to make my cover look not only creepy, but also colorful, so I filled only the surrounding part of my hands with bright green and pink.
If I don't write the title of the song in the cover of album, no one will realize what song I chose, so I had to put the letters in the picture, and I found out that the number of alphabets used in the song's title was exactly 10, which is the number of my nails! So I inserted each alphabets on my nail like this

I also wanted to write down the name of artist, Epic High, but couldn't find any appropriate font for it, so I just wrote it down on a spare paper, took a picture of it, and changed it as a brush in photoshop

After putting my own signature on the top of the picture, I decorated the borders with white, rugged brush and mediated the overall darkness and chroma. My signature was inserted by the same process as the artist's name; draw it with my own hand, take a picture of it, and changing it to a jpg file. Picture on the side is the signature I used in my image.

Spanish Group Work
In a group of five, KMLA's fresh-mans who listen to Spanish class was supposed to make any kind of visible, and tangible materials(computer files like video clips were not allowed) to introduce interesting cultures of countries using Spanish. Our group was consisted of me, Suyeon Lee, Jae eun Lee, Jiwon Park and Yubin Kim, and we decided to search and introduce about different kinds of 'dance'; flamenco, tango and salsa. We made a big book and attached pop-ups which showed representative moves of three kinds of dances. My work in the group was to research about the history and different aspects of flamenco, and bringing different pictures of flamenco's dance moves, but after we all gathered with the informations we searched, (maybe) the biggest part, drawing part was all given to me :-( It took a lot of time filling out the empty, big papers but the result was a satisfactory!

ㄴThe first page was about countries using Spanish, and a brief introduction of the famous dances in those countries
ㄴFlamenco! Flamenco ordinated from gypsys who lived in Spain, and is
danced with a song, guitar and different kinds of stage properties like castanets and fan.
ㄴ The second dance we introduced is tango, which is very popular around the world.
Tango first appeared in Argentina and was initially called as 'baile con corte' which means dance which doesn't stop.
ㄴThe last dance was salsa, developed by Cuban and Puetro Rican who moved to New York.
Latin music, jazz and American rythm style is all mixed in salsa's music and the word 'salsa' originated from word 'sal' and 'salsa', which each means salt and sauce in spain
ㄴOn the last page, we wrote how the upper three dances are used in Korea nowadays, for instance on TV program called 'Dancing with the star', and fusion performance of tango with Korea's traditional song 'Arirang'.

Sunlight vividly licking the leaf
Each year, every high school students in Korea take a test called '모의고사' several times a year, which is a sort of model test for Korea's Scholastic Ability Test, used for college application. It was my second time taking 모의고사 and I found out that on every 모의고사, there is a sentence given for us to copy on the OMR card, in order to check our handwriting to prevent cheating. This time, the sentence was this.
"The sunlight was vividly licking the leaf"
When I first read it, I thought it was hillariousXD How can a sunlight vividly lick the leaf?
It was quite hard to visualize but after the test was done, many people draw that sentence into painting and they seemed quite interesting. So I tried too!
I couldn't really show the word 'vividly' in the picture so I just used vivid color and moderated the chroma of the picture using photoshop
#2 TOEFL Essay
The 21st century has begun. What changes do you think this new century will bring? Use examples and details in your answer.
Everything is changing as time flies by. About 13 years ago, new millennium and another century began with enormous anticipation from people around the world. Since the new era began, the developing technology in different areas have been giving huge influence on people's lifestyle, perspective, lifespan and many other uncountable things. But amongst all those developments, technological development in biological area definitely gave and will give quite huge change in the new 21st century. Biological technology had developed a lot since the late 20th century and human is now able to clone animals, use nanotechnology to cure diseases and transplant organs for longer life.
Once upon a time in a story about ancient China, Qin Shi Huang made numerous attempt to reach immortality. Human being always tried to live a longer life and get free of diseases, and it did have better result; human's lifespan increased a lot than past years, and the biggest reason for this must be the discovery of different kinds of remedies to diseases. As the medical area developed, remedies for diseases which were called as 'untreatable' appeared, such as chicken pox. These days, we can even see the news saying that the cancer patient survived thanks to successful transplanting surgery, and that doctors are developing a cure for Alzheimer, and soon will be able to use it. In short future, cures using cloned animal or human will be developed and used too since cloning animal is already possible nowadays. Recently, scientists found a way to reduce the rejection from human body which occurs when different creature's organ is transplanted, and they said that sooner or later, human will be able to get safe and healthy organs from pigs, and have them transplanted. In the left years of 21st century, we will surely be able to see more development in the area, and find more remedies for dangerous diseases, and this will make human being's lifespan much longer than before.
There also are disadvantageous aspects of biological development, and the most serious expected problem is upcoming of an aging society. As human's lifespan gets longer, and as the medical technology to cure the diseases develop more, the number of elderly increases. Comparatively, the ratio of young people decreases a lot because of the lowering birth rate. This makes the proportion of working people decrease, causes the economic welfare difficulties, and many other social problems. With the aging society, issues about dignity of both human and animal due to development of biological technology is also being concerned and one example which shows it is animal's uses. Some scientists say that animal experiments are needed when carving and developing a new area in biology because we cannot use it directly to human without any security, so countless animals are dying from experiments. It is not only experiments where the animals are used; cloned animal's right might be ignored if their organs are used for human being like I've mentioned in upper paragraph. These abuse of animals which seem to increase a lot in short future causes conflict with people who try to support animal's right. Human rights problem from cloning is also an issue amongst people, and is one of the biggest concern about future which comes from developed technology.
GM's inventor Charles Kettering once said that "We should all be concerned about the future because we will have to spend the rest of our lives there." Future is where we will live, and what we all should be concerned of, and that future is made of what we do in present. As the 21st century began, many changes already happened and for the left 87 years of 21st century, there will be much more changes, depending on what we do now. I truly hope that people living now could wisely make a development in many different areas and think seriously about the possible problems which might occur if we try to make a development in wrong way, and be able to hand over a better world to live for our descendant.
